About our Daughter

I am mother to four wonderful daughters, ages 17, 19, 21, and 23, and wife to the greatest husband on earth. God has given us a special child to raise one who was diagnosed with early-onset bipolar disorder at the age of seven, though she showed signs of it from the age of fifteen months. She also has ADHD, Sensory Integration Disorder (sensory seeking), Dyslexia, and Non-Verbal Learning Disorder-NOS, all typical comorbidities for a bipolar child. In spite of the trials, she enjoys lacrosse, running (finished her first marathon in October of 2014!), and reading and writing her own books. I will share with you the many joys and sorrows we have faced and will face in the future with the hope that you may find better understanding about this mental illness caused by both chemical and structural abnormalities in the brain. I desire that you will be encouraged by this blog if you are also dealing with a bipolar child. Thank you for reading and sharing in our journey.

How Did You Know She Was Bipolar So Young?

I wrote a long explanation of how we came to this bipolar diagnosis in a child so young under my post of March 19th of 2009. If your child or a child you know bears similarities, please seek out a good psychiatrist and don't wait for "things to get better." Often they will simply get worse, and the longer a child is unmedicated, the more damage their brain can accrue. Early diagnoses and treatment are key to providing these children with a chance at a successful life later as a teen and an adult.
Never change, start or stop a medication without the approval of your child's physician!

He has a JOB and we begin a new life!

My husband has been offered a job in Colorado Springs working for a youth ministry there.  We are SO excited, and Caroline is just thrilled to be able to start over again in a new town, with such natural beauty all around.  We hope to move by the end of the school year, but we need to sell our house, and a few other things need to fall into place.  The salary is about $50,000 less than what he made a few years back, when he had a job, but after all we have been through, I don't care.  And the cost of living is a bit better out there, and we already have a house someone has offered to rent to us for a very reasonable amount.  The kids will go to public school, except for Caroline if we think she still needs to be homeschooled.  I may need to get a part time job to make it all work, but that's ok.  We are just so glad we know now where we are going and what we are doing.  If you do pray, please pray that our house will sell for a decent amount in this struggling economy as we do need the proceeds very badly.

Thank you God, for your faithfulness to us through this whole long journey.  We see His hand in all of this, in the timing and in the waiting.

Praise God Megan!! It sure seems like He enjoys being an 11th hour God sometimes but His timing is ALWAYS perfect. Two other friends moved to Colorado just this month. I haven't commented on your posts before but am always blessed by you. Love you woman!! Give our love to Bill!

Congratulations to you all!!

Is there a way for you to use Bill's layoff to get the Gov't to pay for a short sale? My SIL (husband in Navy) moved to MD about 18 mos. ago and kept their house in Suffolk and rented it out. Well, now they've decided to stay in MD after they get back from Bahrain, so they're selling in Suffolk and somehow they are getting Uncle Sam to pay for a short sale as they are about a $100k upside down. It's something to do with if the Navy's lack of jobs has affected the housing market, then you can apply. Personally I don't agree with it in HER situation, but think that it could be a good fit for you!

We really need the cash from our house so we will try not to do a short sale, though we know that if we need to, our bank is very good to underwater homeowners. We aren't underwater at all, about $80,000 over our mortgage. Hopefully we can get that back out.
